About

The Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf was founded by Joe Gersitz, Ted O’Brien and Kathy Cummins in April 1997. It was housed in the First Baptist Church of Penfield at 1862 Penfield Rd until October 2012.

From the very beginning, the philosophy was adopted to serve all who express a need for help with the only requirement being residency in Penfield and to fulfill Christ’s words in the Gospel of Matthew, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." Matthew 25:35.

The first vision was to serve families canned goods and other non-perishable items only. But it very quickly changed to include fresh fruits and vegetables, breads and baked goods.

The move to our present location at 1618 Jackson Rd. occurred on Saturday, November 3, 2012. We are pleased to serve about 80 families on a weekly basis.

All PEFS workers are volunteers and we rely on the generous donations from  Penfield Wegmans, Webster Target,Penfield Aldi's, Schutt's Apple Mill, Webster Walmart, Wickham Farms, area businesses, schools, families, local churches, civic groups

and private donors.  Thank you!

We gladly serve those in need in the 14625 and 14526 zip codes.
